MISTAKES INTO MIRACLES

My life was turned upside down in 2012 when I was investigated by HMRC. This arose because during a period of intense pressure, whilst struggling to stop my businesses from failing & bringing up a young family, I neglected to maintain my tax affairs & declare certain income received. I battled for 3 years to resolve the matters, but despite the circumstances, I was pronounced guilty of tax irregularities in 2015.

PRESSURE, CHAOS, UPHEAVAL

The resultant investigation occurred at a period in my life of intense an unmatched pressure. Ruth & I had a young family with 4 children under the age of 7. At the time, I had built up 4 businesses in Yorkshire and we had recently relocated 300 miles to Hertfordshire.  I was trying to manage them remotely while dealing with the challenges of adapting to a new area, finding new schools, establishing new friends. We had to move house 5 times in 6 years, each time with a young family and the major chaos & upheaval that brought. This pressure also took a toll on my businesses and ultimately led to their closure and me facing personal bankruptcy.

Although what occurred was not due to deliberate actions to commit fraud, notwithstanding I take full responsibility because ignorance is no defence in the law, and either by commission or omission, in the eyes of the law you are still guilty.

GOOGLE IT

The internet is awash with articles regarding it, and if you google “Jerome Anekwe” or “Destiny Christian Centre” it’s one of the first things you’ll see.  Maybe you may have come across some articles about it on Google while you were checking out Destiny Christian Centre.

I pray as I share my heart, this article will give you the “story behind the story”, and I pray it will be a help to many people on their life journey.

BROKEN

When all this happened, I struggled to believe that God could even love me again…..use me again or still have plan for my life. I struggled to believe I can be a good husband to Ruth, a good father to our sons, a good brother, son, uncle, or Pastor.  The last thing I ever wanted to do was to bring shame to the name of Jesus, or disrepute to the testimony of Christ in the earth.  I felt I had let myself down, my wife & my family down and most importantly God and the Body of Christ down.

For years I was flooded with thoughts that it would better for me to just go away, stop Pastoring and give up on God’s call, stay silent, and hide away in a corner. For years I walked trapped as a prisoner of shame, I carried a burden of guilt and wrestled with the weight of condemnation. I let the guilt & shame the enemy used the guilt & shame…to silence my voice and keep me bound, living half-a-life. Though I smiled on the outside, inside I was bruised, broken and in need of healing.

FAMILY IS EVERYTHING

After crying out to God his miraculous power began to work in my heart, and step by step to uncover the layers of bondage, guilt and shame. The Bible says there is therefore now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1), as far as the East is from the West, so far has he removed our transgressions from us (Psalm 103:1) and our sins and our lawless deeds he will remember no more (Hebrews 8:12).  I have experienced restoration through prayer, the loving support of Ruth & the Destiny Family.  It has been a journey of daily yielding to Him, choosing to believe what God says, living in the freedom of that and daily immersing my heart, mind, soul & strength in the love God has for me. A journey of taking God at his word, and knowing the power of the blood Jesus shed on the cross. Through this I discovered fresh hope and the power there is in his Name. I have come to know liberty through the Holy Spirit from guilt, shame, fear & condemnation and I’ve discovered that mercy truly triumphs over judgment (James 2:13).

 WHY ME, LORD?

I have shared my story here, to help anyone who has ever made a mistake, taken a wrong turn or done things they are ashamed of.  Anyone who felt they’ve let God, themselves or their family down because of their actions. Anyone who’ve felt that they’ve blown it in life and that there’s no way back.

I’ve shared my story for those who are carrying guilt & shame, condemnation, rejection, hurt, regret and pain from the past.  Who’ve done some things they can’t explain, because sometimes good people do wrong things.

Psalm 37:23-24 tells us, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. Though he falls, he will not be destroyed; for the Lord will be there to pick him up.”   Beloved, the Bible full of people who had notorious pasts and infamous backgrounds. There were prostitutes, murderers, adulterers, criminals, political & social activists, serial womanisers, thieves, deceivers…and the list goes on! God used them all and never allowed their pasts or reputations to determine their future. He truly can take the foolish things of this world, to confound the wise (1 Corinthians 1:27).

OUR HEART AT DESTINY

If you considering making DCC your home, I want you to know that at Destiny we will never judge you by your past or condemn you for it. Destiny is a place for imperfect people loving a perfect Saviour. We are not perfect, we understand the treasure is in earthen vessels and we all have come short of the glory of God.  But we will accept you, love you and see you as God’s sees you.  God is not looking for perfect people, only those whose hearts are right.   Recently, the Lord gave our Church a prophetic word from Ephesians 3:20 “now unto him that is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above what you can ask or think”, and that He will turn even our Ishmael’s into something exceeding abundant. I invite you, let’s face the future together, and let Him give you beauty for ashes.

YOU’RE PAST IS NOT THE FUTURE FOR YOU

The crux of this message is that your failures, past, shame or brokenness does not have to spell the end for you. With God, your mistakes don’t have to define you and gloom, misery, sadness, disappointment and regret are not your future.   God loves you & He sees past all those things, and despite it all and in spite of it all, He still WANTS YOU!

You can still make an impact for God, & shine to the glory of God.

I am here today, as a living testimony to that.

Dear friend, I am your friend.

I believe in you.

Don’t stay broken. Don’t stay down.

You can rise again.

God bless you.

Jerome
